Markus Schinwald Conference Festival de l’histoire de l’art in Fontainebleau, France
For the 14th edition of the Festival de l’histoire de l’art, organised around the theme ‘Le vrai, le faux’ [‘The true, the false’], Austria is the featured country. The festival will bring together 30 Austrian curators, film-makers and academics and artists, among them Markus Schinwald, for a programme of more than 200 events, including conferences, round tables, film screenings, exhibitions.
Markus Schinwald's artistic universe draws on a repertoire of images that have been transformed and subjected to a complex scenography. In his recent works, the Austrian artist revisits seemingly old paintings by superimposing a filter created using generative technologies. Vertical shapes, coloured dots and speckled patches blur, distort or partially mask the image, preventing the viewer from maintaining a neutral distance. He himself draws a parallel between his approach and that of the historian or filmmaker: choice of frame, perspective and depth. In keeping with the theme of truth and falsity chosen for this year's show, in this inaugural lecture he will talk about his experiments, which are veritable triggers for the imaginary.
